I don´t get it. I. Just. Don´t. Get. It.
Surely it is the first episode and all, but this single episode of yuri, bears and metrosexual men had me reminiscent of the final half Mawaru Penguidrum that was a bit too intellectual and overly-symbolic for my simple animu taste. It might be the strange translations (´Everything will be daijobu´) the way everything went so fast or the fact that we´re treated to a yuri confession on the first second, followed by an, uh, interesting opening.
The thing is, YuriKuma episode 1 bored me, it couldn´t grab me at all and all the characters look way to much like eachother, this mixed with the infamous Ikuhara artstyle and the YuriKuma train kicked me off board before it even got its engines running.
Maybe it´s because I was never a big fan of Ikuhara and his storytelling – I can see the appeal, but it´s just not for me – because Penguindrum was fun up until the later half where the deep monologues, strange motifs, symbolism (most of which isn´t even symbolism) and a tempo that´s all over the place just doesn´t cut it for me, and YuriKuma seems to be all about that life.
I´ll give it two more episodes, hopefully this was just a warming up, or maybe I´m just too dumb to not appreciate flower symbolism, man eating cannibals and lesbians.
