If I had to point out one major flaw in otome-adapted anime, is that they all take themselves way to seriously. And with that I don’t mean that they are too serious. Even with it’s comedy, I feel as if the people behind them are really trying to make it work and do the best they can.
And because of this, I personally think Uta No Prince Sama shines brigther than the rest; In the over-the-top animation, in the over-the-top quirky characters, in the over-the-top cheesy music; Everything is mighty over the top and it is great.
I did not like the first season of Prince Sama, maybe because I was taking it too seriously, but years later, while watching 2000% love I was adoring it. It’s funny, it’s music is catchy and more importantly; It puts me in a good mood.
While it does follow the cliché route of one-character-per-episode, the serie itself feels alot more laid back and relaxed than every other show in it’s genre, and it’s lack of seriousness becomes more and more obvious as each episode passes, (We really, really need to talk about that one scene with the CD and the shoujo sparkles.)
This doesn’t take away from it’s quality though; Uta No Prince Sama has one of the prettiest and brigthest animation I have ever seen, and I’m not even going to go into the ED dances.
Prince Sama is one of if not the most succesful otome adaptation ever, and I can really see why; I recommend you give it a try.
