What I Have To Say About The CNN “Manga Is Child Porn” Issue.

We found something far less innocent, in a place that caters to young people, a comic-book store. We’re shooting this story with hidden cameras to show you what’s being sold here […] so graphic, so sexually explicit we turned our undercover cameras off, but everything for sale here is LEGAL.

This is journalism at it’s finest: A well-researched and objective insight on manga and it’s questionable shenanigans. Not.

Look, you know it, I know it, anime and manga have some pretty messed up tropes and tendencies that are normalized and put under the label “Lolicon” or “Shotacon“, even in non-explicit shows like, I don’t know, this season’s Black Bullet indicate some obvious Lolicon-pandering right there.  Yes, I think some of the harder hentai could or should be toned down, no I don’t think it should be banned.

Apart from the fact that I think US-based CNN shouldn’t be spoting absolute BS on some far-away country and the niche hobby that is the animemanga scene before looking at it’s own  facts and realize that, oh wow, the US is actually the biggest offender of child-pornography. Their absolute amazement over the fact these hard-worked comics are, shock, gasp,  actually legal makes it even better  knowing that guns are also perfectly legal in their own country, something that caused alot more harm on children than some obscure Japanese comics ever have and ever will.

Sure, I won’t bash poor ol’ Merrica for this, I mean, it’s not like all Americans go around waving a gun around nor do they collectively get off on three year olds. And, guess what, Japan is the same: It might sound absolutely unthinkable and crazy but, wow! not every anime or manga fan watches dat hardcore pedophile anee-may! Yeah, crazy right?

I know most of us just watched the video, got angry and laughed it off but, my God, the ignorance is high in this one.

On to my actual opinion on the matter, I’m with Ken Akamatsu on this one, apart from falling  in love with his sick drawing-pad, ShotaconLolicon is not hurting anyone and unless the kid has been force-fed with this shit since young I honestly doubt that some random comic is going to influence any mentally-stable and well-educated person in doing the wrong thing.

Furthermore, this is all to similar to the “Videogames trigger violence!!1!” discussion, or the “Twilight causes mysogny among the young” debate. It’s all about how you take and what kind of education you’ve had to take any kind of fiction for reality. I think we need to take a step back and realize that, if we educate our children that these things are wrong, they will have the common sense to know it’s wrong and can  get exposed to so much of that shit without feeling the need to rape a young girl, or play Call of Duty all night without picking up a gun a shoot around at his school or being an avid lover of Twilight without leaving everything behind and changing oneself to be with the “perfect guy.

Clearly CNN had nothing better to write about, so cheers to them and their degree in journalism they probably payed thousands for.
