Oh anime and your highschool fetish. What is it about the stress, peer-pressure and homework galore that you love so much?
Be it a highschool invaded by zombies, highschool after death, higschool with vampires or highschool filled with god damn lesbians, the word “highschool” is almost always present. Hell, just look at the shows I’m watching this season, where 10 out of 17 revolve around the idea of freakin´ highschool.
Things get even funnier when you realize that some of the biggest anime to date (Sword Art Online, Shingeki No Kyojin, Naruto, Cowboy Bebop, Gintama, Steins;Gate, Fullmetal Alchemist, One Piece) have exactly nothing to do with it.
So, what is that the otaku love so much about higshchool? The answer is pretty simple, in fact, it’s the same answer to the question “why are most chick-lits related to highschool?”
I’ll let you think of the answer: Meanwhile, I´ll compile a list of highschool-oriented anime that are actually worth your time, cheers.
1. Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
Yes, this dark comedy satire show whose epilogue could go “suicidal teacher ends up in a class full of weirdo girls” was actually set in highschool. Sure, the show consisted out of SHAFT taking the piss out of exactly anything and everything, it goes without saying that we won’t see a show set in highschool that has both suicide and tsundere in the same episode for a long, long time.
2) Paradise Kiss
From the manga godess herself Ai Yazawa; Creator of my all time favourite manga and anime Nana, Paradise Kiss is a story of love, misfits, punk and school. Fashion school, that is.
Sure, the decade-old adaptation is pretty poor in comparison to the amazing and beautifully ilustrated manga, but it´s still worth a shot as it does what no other anime has dared to do.
Surprised? Don´t be. Chihayafuru is A+ in ever department except romance. With the excitment and action of Kuroko no Basket (With cards!), the shoujo-vibes that are impossible to ignore and the stunning animation done by the hands of MADHOUSE makes Chihayafuru a highschool-centered anime worth watching.
4. Ouran Highschool Host Club
Often you´ll hear or see people praise Ouran HSHC for being a hilarious and fresh take on the shoujo/Reverse-harem genre, rigthfully so.
Ouran HSHC is one of the few shows that makes me laugh, hard. Sure it´s cliché, sure the animation is outdated, but man, find me a show that has the love and care that Ouran has and I´ll kiss you. Forreal.
5) School Days
