In news that´s significant in pretty much every single area of the anime sphere and its future, it has been announced that the second season of FLCL is going to be split up into two seasons, that it´s going to be a direct sequel planned for late 2017 and early 2018, and that the Adult Swim block on Toonami will have a hand in its production, just like they did with the Big O almost a decade ago.
“Many years have passed since Naota and Haruhara Haruko shared their adventure together.” Says Adult Swim´s description of the new story on their official Facebook page. “Meanwhile, the war between the two entities known as Medical Mechanica and Fraternity rages across the galaxy. Enter Hidomi, a young teenaged girl who believes there is nothing amazing to expect from her average life, until one day when a new teacher named Haruko arrives at her school. Soon enough, Medical Mechanica is attacking her town and Hidomi discovers a secret within her that could save everyone, a secret that only Haruko can unlock.
But why did Haruko return to Earth? What happened to her Rickenbacker 4001 she left with Naota? And where did the human-type robot ‘Canti’ go?”
And so it begins – personally, judging by this description I think it´s the best thing they could have done; keep the old cast but still have a new story to solve on its own tied to it. I´ve never cared too much for FLCL, but I acknowledge its significance and can appreciate its music and balls-off-the-walls energy it has, apart from its grandious ambition. What really peaks my interest from this new is Adult Swims direct spoon in the soup when it comes to its production – Toonami, a company that has been with anime since the dawn of fuckin´ time somewhat beating Netflix into creating anime 0 – which you could argue isn´t a first time, but this one is definitely the most relevant and almost like a second chance to what the West can mean to anime in the future.
In any case, slated for early 2018 it´s still a long time coming.
