Y’all already know that Free! is my favourite anime of the year 2013, and easily finds it’s place in my top 10 anime of all time while also being one of the few anime that I just can’t review objectively without fangirling all over the place, squealing, screaming and heavy breathing.
So what about it’s sequel, Eternal Summer? Well…
… It has a rocky start, I’ll say: It all feels a little too slice-of-lifey, cutesy and uneventful in contrast to the banging finale of it’s first season. I’m missing the intensity, the angst and the misplaced sexual innuendos.
Thankfully, it’s picking up steadily and while episode 1 had me dissapointed, episode 2 and 3 (3 especially) made me feel the feels again, I’m expecting things to get dramatic around episode 4-5.
With that said, I hope Free! doesn’t pass this opportunity to give us more of that, drama. Sure reverse-moe highschool-hijinks are cute and all, but I don’t want this to become K-On, just like the haters predicted the first season to be. All in all, Free! ES will be my favourite anime of the season regardless of any of that, I just hope to come out of this franchise saying “Yes, this was a good god damned series even without the abs.“
