The Ending Of Kyoukai No Kanata; A Rant.

yrrfVnSCan I please take a few minutes of your time to discuss Kyoani’s inability of killing off a character?

Clannad, Kannon, Kyoukai No Kanata, Hell, even Angel Beats! We see them die except that they don’t. Yo, that’s all fine and dandy, for the first time.

While I thought the last episode of Kyoukai was the best of the entire series, (Well, aside from the obvious idoru episode) I could literally not bring myself to feel as emotionally moved as I should have felt. Sure, I almost, almost got some tears in my eyes because Mirai “supposedly” died for the second time, and dang, for half a second there I thought that maybe she really did and I could go to Tumblr to hail about the ending and cry.

Except that she didn’t die and much less did I cry, I was anticipating the asspull of an ending and I was right.

Now, I’m not saying that character deaths make a show better or darker or edgier, but I think that Kyoukai had two choices to being with; Akihito and Mirai end up together withakisspleaseandthankyou or Akihito or Mirai actually die. A kiss would have seriously made this show worth a while.

Still, they pulled a ClannadKanon and I don’t think this will change until they unanimously decide to bend over their entire fanbase. I will be patient and look forward to that day.

  1. Notably, KyoAni has nothing to do with Angel Beats :D. But this does bring up the point that all the shows you mention sans Kyoukai no Kanata are Key novel adaptations, so maybe a rant about Key is more in order. Then again, the very first Key adaptation KyoAni did – Air – ended up with the whole main cast dead in exchange for a vague “the curse is lifted and the following generations won’t have to suffer as much” promise.
