Wow I don’t remember this episode of Haikyuu.
Ping Pong the Moenation, or Shakunetsu no Takkyuu Musume if you want to be difficult, was asking to get ripped apart – from the poster to the concept, a club of bootleg Lucky Star cast look-a-likes playing ping pong seems ridiculous and typical but, frankly, has more impact than most other shows this season so far.
The idea that websites like ANN are rating edgy bullshit like Trickster higher than this seems absolutely ridiculous to me. You see, I don’t like moe. I don’t like it just like most of us don’t. I was going into this prepared to dislike it, I left the episode anticipating more.
Shakunetsu no Takkyuu Musume, with all it’s cute girl sweat and praise kinks is the closest thing to a ’serious’ sports anime with an all female cast we have gotten in a some time. By which I mean that there is tension, there are stakes, they take their time with the games. It’s in the same vein as Haikyuu and Kuroko no Basket, except it’s moefied, and that sets people back, but might lure the people who matter (read: the buyers) in.
It takes half the episode to get there. To be fair. We get an idol scene which is part of Mrs.Praise Kinks wet dream and I rolled my eyes so far to the back of my head I thought I was going blind.
After we are introduced to Kuroko. I mean Hinata. I mean our redhead protagonist, it gets pretty cool.
I’m not saying it’s going to be the best of the season. I’m not even saying it’s gonna be top-crop. What I am saying is that this episode was criminally glossed over with misconceptions because of the moe character designs – give it a chance, it might just be the sports anime to watch.
If it weren’t for the moe, you’d probably watch it.
