It took me no less than two months to finish this 25-episode series. Why? Well, for one I was suffering under algebra and I felt like I needed the right mindset to get the most out of this stunningly amazing show.
Being the only show to come out Studio Gonzo that anyone actually likes, Gankutsuou is on the top of the anime and fiction food-chain: It’s mysterious, interesting, dramatic, comedic, it’s everything you want while being stylized masterfully.
I can’t recommend this show any more without singing it unreasonable praises.
Based of the novel The Count Of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas, Gankutsuou tells the tale of Albert Mocef, a naive young man who befriends the Count of Monte Cristo who’s plan of secrets and veangance hits dangerously close to him, putting everyone in Paris a turmoil.
It says based on, but really Gonzo took the liberty to anime-up a lot of things, presenting a show that many consider a masterpiece. Personally, I wouldn’t go that far, but it’s definitely up there with the best of the best not only in anime, but fiction in general. All in all, Gankutsuou is a must-watch for everyone, whether you like action, comedy, romance, psychological thrillers or drama.
