Winter 2014 taught us that little sisters are passé and sóó 2013, proving this with the ludicrous and kind of hilarious Pupa while also bringing back up the never ending discussion of can anime be made in the West?!?! with the new (And dissapointing) Watanabe show; Space Dandy, and speaking of dissapointing, Mahou Sensou told me that not everything made by MADHOUSE is godlike. Thankfully though, we’re not paradise lost yet as the saving trinity of Winter rose, concluding to a season of incest, space, strangeness, lesbians, sisters, basketball, gods, more gods, superheros, talking clothes and higschool.
Oh, It’s always the higschool.
Winter 2014 Holy Trinity:
D-Frag is silly, stupid, dumb, weird, over the top and flippin’ hilarious. The Nichibros got nothing on the D-frag girls and the D-Frag masochist boys, that’s one thing I can guarantee. So unless you don’t like shouting main characters that put the shonen MC’s to shame, pony tails andor love triangles I am almost sure that you agree with me when I say that D-Frag is the best show of it’s season.
2.Kuroko No Basket 2
Wait, I take that back, ’cause there’s one thing that only Kuroko No(pe) Basket can do that no other show has ever done to me: Make me jump up from my comfortable chair, smile from ear to ear and clap with a sense of victory while yelling “Yes!” That’s right, even after a busy and exhausting day of school I can always count on Kuroko to wake me up, and what a way to do it. Cheers, Kuroko, che-ers.
If there is one show I will be recommending in the future, it’s gonna be this one. Samurai Flamenco is by far the most original and eccentric show of it’s season that made me rage, smile and scream all in the same episode: Yes, it’s fuckin’ weird, and that’s it’s charm. Also, anime needs more model leads.
Highlights of The Winter Season:
While these shows don’t come exactly close to the Holy Winter Trinity, they did play their role and played it well; All in all, the following anime definitely made up for some of the seasons highlights.
4.Kill la Kill
Kill la Kill was the biggest surprise for me, ’cause while I expected myself to adore the former three shows, I had little to no hope for Kill la Kill…until it actually started to get good. Yes, this show spawned Satsuki, Mako, Nudist beach
Lady Gaga and a whole lotta’ hype. Long story short, this show definitely deserves it’s hype and I’m glad I gave this show a chance.
Noragami is a very heartwarming show that made me feel alot of things in 12 weeks. It made me laugh, it made me sad, it made me happy and it reminded me just why I love anime as much as I do. All in all, this show deserves to be watched and I can safely say that this is one of the more memorable shows of the season.
6.Inari Kon kon Koi Iroha
Winter saw the wonderful debut of Studio IMS, and what a way to start. Inari Kon Kon Koi Iroha might not be the most memorable show of the pack, but it’s definitely the sweetest, cutest, heartwarming and the most genuine show I’ve seen in the past 2 or 3 months of Winter. To keep it short, this show is fluffy as heck and it’s great in what it does.
Shows that deserve a mention
While these shows aren’t exactly “good”, they did do something for me to enjoy them… whatever that is. Anyway and anyhow, here goes:
8.Onee-chan Ga Kita
The whole younger sister fetish (if that’s what you can call it) has always been kind of weird to me, I mean, is seeing your flat-chested little sister in a bikini really all that exciting? I mean, I wouldn’t know; Because if it were up to me I would rather be doted on by my gorgeous older sister. Enter Onee-chan ga kita.
9.Hamatora the Animation
Hamatora is a total technical mess of a show, but boy, did I enjoy the hell out of it. Be it the (un)intentional bromance or the fact that Murasaki is a thing. It only ranked this low because of Art’s hair, someone call the fashion police and call it fast.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say again; Space dandy has so many ups and downs you might think it’s about to have a heart attack. While it’s definitely daring and the dub is amazing, I just can’t get over it’s episodic format that just begs for critique.
Winter 2014 Hall Of Shame:
The title says it all.
If I were Jesus, I would change the title “Golden Time” to “Angst time“, or “Fuck You Time” or “These Characters Need To Calm The Fuck Down Time.” I mean, forreal, never have I seen a show get pissed on as much as Golden Time got pissed on by the supernatural, horrid pacing and terribad characters.
13. Nagi No Asukara
Wait, I lied: If there is one show that got screwed over harder than Golden Time it’s this one. P.A Works has proven that no, jaw-dropping gorgeous animation can not save a clusterfuck of a “plot” and character that are all over the place:
A likes B, but B likes C, shortly afterwards, D also like A but A still likes B that still likes C, C ignores B but then likes E, E likes A but F likes E, 5 years later G likes F but F still likes E who now likes C. A still likes B but B can’t love anymore.
That’s it that’s the plot.
Yes this show is just as stupid as it looks and I hope that MADHOUSE is proud for spawning this travesty of a show that puts School Days and Hakuoki to shame. I have lost a little bit of hope in myself for keeping up with this shit for 12 weeks. Cheers.
