A Look Into The Summer 2014 Anime Season: Gore, Magic, Trains & A Whole Lotta Abs.

82

It’s 2014 and the anime scene’s otaku pandering business are as prominent as ever, shows who’s purpose is to just be good rather than sellable is becoming rarer than it ever was before, and the male side of the community are still holding the baton when it comes gender-centric anime. But it’s almost Summer 2014 and things are changing. I think I like it.

Akame Ga Kill!

From Studio Whitefox, which brought you Steins;Gate and Jormungand. Akame Ga Kill will be an edgy shows praised to be AOTY by the same adolescent boys and girls that thought Mirai Nikki was the best shit ever.

It has girls, blood and a dumbass spikey-haired naive main character that gets all the V. From the trailer alone you can pretty much guess their entire personality and the obvious tragic backstory they’re gonna get. That said, I feel like I will enjoy Akame Ga Kill somehow.

Aldnoah.Zero

Brought to you by A1 Pictures & TROYCA, but you only really care about this ’cause it has the name Gen Urubuchi and Ei Aoiki tagged to it. Responsible for FateZero, I feel like all the merit of the afromentioned show belongs to it’s studio rather than writers. I also think Aldnoah.Zero will be absolute garbage and consist out of people talking week after week. I will naturally give it a try.

Ao Haru Ride

Ao Haru Ride will be just another shoujo anime done by Production I.G, granted, I feel like it will be one of my favourites of the season.

Bakumatsu Rock

So get this: The story is set in the Bakumatsu era, at the end of the shoguns’ rule over Japan in the middle of the 19th century. The Tokugawa shogunate uses the brainwashing Heaven’s Songs by the top idols in Shinsengumi to subjugate the country and its people. In this Japan, writing or singing any songs besides the Heaven’s Songs is a capital offense. Sakamoto Ryouma and the other rockers rise up and change the world with rock ‘n’ roll for freedom and justice.  If this will not end up to be one of if not the most ridiculous title of 2014, I will reconsider this hobby of mine. I think Utapri meets Sengoku Basara, the fact that it’s DEEN puts me off, but I’ll stay positive and will watch this either way.

Barakamon

83

I feel like this only got picked up because the author of Yotsuba; doesn’t want his manga to get animated. Regardless of that, I expect a fluffy, ligthearted comedy that’s sometimes touching, but mostly forgettable.

Sailor Moon Crystal

I’ll be honest and say that I did not like the Sailor Moon manga. It felt messy and confusing, with too much plot and too little heart. It actually felt like the complete opposite of the 300-something-episodes-long TV series. I will watch it anyway just to see how they’re gonna anime-up my favourite Mahou Shoujo show.

DRAMAtical Murder

I have little to no hope for this. You just can’t fit a 30+ hour game and it’s sequel in a 12×24 minutes TV show.

If it were 24 episodes, alright, but we all know that that’s not gonna be the case. My second complaint is the animation studio. DRAMAtical Murder‘s art is beautiful, Hamatora The Animation was not.

My third complaint is the direction. DRAMAtical Murder’s focus was more on the character relationships rather than plot, judging from this trailer they’re gonna try and highlight the story which is not all that interesting to begin with.

My fourth complaint is all the gore and sex that will be censored.

My fifth complain is the fact that Togainu No Chi is still on my concious. My sixth complaint is the music that went from trance to Vietnamese gaybar hits. My seventh complaint is actually more of a question. Why are the creators okay with this adaptation?

I will watch it, and if it sucks, I know who’s responsible.

Free! Eternal Summer.

YEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSS

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun

This is an interesting one. It feels like a reverse harem about boys drawing shoujo, but apparently it is a gut-breaking hilarious comedy. It is also done by studio Dogakobo which produces small wonders, but never break-out hits. So far, this feels like the most polished series in the list and I expect it to be a solid ligthearted comedy that won’t get alot of attention.

Glasslip

Oh P.A Works, I really, really hope  Nagi No Asukura was just a terrible, terrible blunder. As far as the PV goes, this looks a little more down to earth than the melodramatic experience that was NagiAsu. Atleast the characters look a bit more mature and likeable, for now. I will stay cautious for this one.

 Hanamonogatari

See here is Akiyuki Shinbo needing some pocket change. Hanamonogatari will focus around best girl so I am very, very excited. I also don’t understand the people that don’t know how to watch this show: Bakemonogatari, Nisemonogatari, Nisemonogatari Kuro, Nisemonogatari Shiro, Monogatari Second Season, Hanamonogatari.

 Kantai Collection

The world and especially Japan is full with weird things, Kantai Collection is one of said weird things. I never understood it but, in it’s defense, I never cared enough to find out. The PV is literally a girl taking a shower and somehow, this is adapted from an online card game that, because it has cute and quirky girls, gained a huge cult following. This is the first show on the list that I won’t watch.

Kuroshitsuji: Book Of Circus

Oh man. I am so excited. Kuroshitsuji with better animation, adapted straight from the manga? July can’t come any faster.

Love Stage!!

Going from potential gay to most-definitely-gay we have Love Stage!! which is for once, a one cour yaoi anime not adapted from a Nakamura manga. Cheers to that. I really like the manga and, even though there are so many other yaoi that deserve a stable adaptation rather than this one, Love Stage is the most likely to receive commercial success and, boy, do I hope this will get attention.

Rail Wars!

This will get so much hype when it airs. It’s basically Mahouka without the Imouto and magic: Solid animation, stupid fucking walking archtypes rather than characters and tits. I also suspect this will be 80% people talking and 20% action. By action I mean train action and boob action as you and I have seen in this trailer. Whatever I guess.

RE: Hamatora

84

I have no good reason to watch this. But I will. Of course Nice is not dead, of course Hamatora doesn’t dare to be that bold. Naturally our 2D Jesus will dodge the bullet or survive the bullet. Of course this is gonna be another season of using other (Better) characters to make Headphone-wearing Buddah look that much more awesome. You go anime, keep doing you.

Sengoku Basara Judge End

85

Sengoku Basara is here for a third season for all your pretty boy samurai speaking engrish in a testorone filled over-the-top battle needs. This show, it’s good. Watch it.

Shounen Hollywood -Holly Stage For 49-

This is gonna be so, so bad. Unless you know you’re good, idol shows should never aim to be serious or dramatic, ’cause it will just come out as dumb. Shonen Hollywood doesn’t know this apparently.

Space Dandy Pt 2.

86

I don’t have alot to say about this except that I’m not looking forward to it. 12 episode of Space Dandy was more than enough, we do not need more.

 Sword Art Online II

Sword Art Online doesn’t need a PV. Everyone knows Sword Art Online. Like it or hate it, you most definitely know it. And, really? This, Akame ga Kill and Free! airing in the same season? the community will become a battlefield.

Tokyo ESP

I literally have NO expectations for this show. Is it gore? is it drama? is it slice of life? Judging by the colour, it’s definitely weird. I get a bit of them Penguindrumm vibes, but I’m not so sure yet.

Tokyo Ghouls

From the two horror slash gore shows of this season, I really, really hope this will be the better one just to shut the (Already) obnoxious fanboys and fangirls alike up. Atleast this one looks like it’s not gonna rely on fanservice to sell, basically, it has everything set up to be awesome. This is one of the shows I am most looking forward to of the season.

Zankyo No Terror

Now, this is a show that aspires to more than sales otaku pandering. This looks like a show of a high caliber. The music, feel and animation is already lookin’ amazing and the show hasn’t even started yet. This is gonna be good. So, so good.

And with all that said, I feel like the Summer season is gonna be my favourite yet, putting the Light Novel trash to a minininum and the high-profile shows on top, what are you looking forward to the most? Cheers.
