A Look Into The Spring 2015 Anime Season: Definitely Not Kyoani & Fanservice.

Well, damn. The Winter season was one hell of a terrible mix of lost potential, failing sequels, hurtful second cours and a fresh pile of absolutely nothing. Apart from Death Parade, Shirobako, Kuroko, Durarara and Assassination Classroom, nothing of this season had me enjoying the season. But hey, Spring´s here, the weather is slowly but steadily going from depressingly cold to depressingly hot and a new chart of Chinese cartoons is up and ready to blow your mind. Or not.

Ameiro Cocoa

Studio: EMT Squared (Literally nothing. This is also a 2 minute short)
Director: Mohizuki Tomomi (Twins Spica, Ai Monogatari, Zettai Shonen)
Will I watch it?: What the fuck, sure.

Apparently it´s a yaoi based on a webcomic and the uke has kyoani inspired eyes –  If this doesn´t include a threesome scene we´re all wasting our time.

Arslan Senki

Studio: Liden Films (A bunch of in-betweens, Miss Monochrome, Terraformas)
Director: Noriyuki Abe (Black Butler; Book of Circus & Murder, Great Teacher Onizuka, Bleach)
Will I watch it?: I´ll give it an episode.

I haven´t seen Fullmetal Alchemist nor that space opera show because I´m not a hipster. Anyways, I´m expecting a mediocre to decent adventure show. Unfortunately fantasy and adventure are the genres I least like in any medium, so I don´t expect this to tickle my fancy, and much less when LIDEN Films is on board.

Baby Steps 2

Studio: Pierrot (Tokyo Ghoul, Akatsuki No Yona, Naruto)
Director: Masahiko Murata (Nothing except season 1)
Will I watch it?: No-pe.

Don´t care for season one, care even less now that there´s a season two.

Denpa Kyoshi

Studio: A1 Pictures (Sword Art Online, Love Live, Saekano)
Director: Masato Sato (Case Closed, that is all.)
Will I watch it?: Lol no.

The most anime-y anime of the season, possibly the year. Everything about this trailer screams stereotypical mess that makes people hate the medium. Hey, I´m a fan of the loud and rowdy comedy a lá D-Frag – a show a lot of people hated for some reason, and while this may not be too  far from the afromentioned show, the director and studio and potential episode lenght leave me uninterested, no thanks.

Ace of Diamond.

Studio: Madhouse (Death Note, Death Parade, Black Lagoon)
Director: Yuji Terajima
Will I watch it?: Nah.

I´m sure this show is good, but I don´t want to jump on the bandwagon knowing that it´s already on its second season, maybe someday and, besides, Kuroko No Basket and Haikyuu are enough to fill my sports animu needs for now.

Is It Wrong To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon Game?

Studio: JC Staff (Toradora, etc)
Director: Yoshiki Yamakawa (Little Busters, Hatsukoi Limited, Kill Me Baby)
Will I watch it?: Nope.

Is this  JC Staff´s way of trying to recreate Sword Art Online and No Game No Life? Maybe not, but it definitely feels that way, anyways, this just seems like your standard harem comedy with some action stuffed in it, it doesn´t inspire anything else.

Studio: Encourage Films ( Ontama)
Director: Fumitoshi Oizaki (Ontama, Romeo x Juliet)
Will I watch it?: Would rather watch Is it wrong to pick up girls ina dungeon.

Apart from being a creepy-ass kawaii desu nyan Chinese horoscope anime, it´s also a creepy-ass CGI kawaii desu nyan Chinese horoscope anime…with weird proportions. I´m unsure if this caters to children or adults with peculiar tastes. But hey, I´m not one to judge.

Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works 2nd Season

Studio: Ufotable (Kara No Kyoukai, Fate Zero,
Director: Takahiro Miura (Only this, he didn´t even do Fate/Zero, which explains a lot)
Will I watch it?: Yes.

I´m going to be 100% honest here; I thought the first part of Unlimited Blade Works was friggin´ boring. I lost count of the times I was just rolling my eyes and sighing through the episode, praying for some slick action to happen, ´cause, let´s be real, that´s the reason most of us watch it for anyways.

Seriously, Ufotable and the fans of the franchise pride themselves over the action scenes, but is the price of cliché highschool stereotype characters and a boring story really worth it? A team is only as strong as its weakest link, and no matter how well they cocktease us with the action, it´s simply not worth it if it means spending 5 hours on generic rom-com or shounen tropes and only 30 minutes on the action. Just watch Fate/Zero or Kara No Kyoukai instead, man. Still, Fate/Zero got best in its second cour, so I guess I have to sit through this, too.

It´s such a shame I don´t have a lot of time, ´cause from the twenty-something episodes I´ve seen, I loved it, maybe sometime in the future, but now is not the time.

Grisaia No Rakuen

Studio: 8-Bit (Absolute Duo, Infinite Stratos, Walkure Romanze, a.k.a trashy harem kings)
Director: Tensho (Kiniro Mosaic, Ikkitousen)
Will I watch it?: Not a chance.

Is this the sequel to the hilariously pseudo-psychological Shaft-like anime from last season with the kid with the daddy complex? I can´t tell, because the poster makes it seem like something produced by Key. One way or another, I don´t care.

Gunslinger Stratos

Studio: A-1 Pictures (Sword Art Online, Kuroshitsuji, Utapri)
Director: Shinpei Ezaki (Guilty Crown OVA)
Will I watch it?: Maybe.

Honestly, this doesn´t seem that terribly awful as most game adaptations genereally are, it looks like fun and nothing more, so if I can squeeze in another anime to my Spring list, this´ll probably be it. Also I want to play the game.

Hibike! Euphonium

Studio: Kyoto Animation (K-On, Free!, Haruhi Suzumiya, Clannad)
Director: Tatsuya Ishihara (Air, Kannon, Chuunibyo)
Will I watch it?: Without a doubt.

I love Kyoani, and apart from the royal mess that was Kyokai No Kanata, their shows are generally at the top of their respective season for me, so while Hibike might mark their return to the moe-pandering after the fujoshi-fest that was Free, I have no doubt I´ll enjoy this show to its fullest, I don´t care if its K-on with violins. I want it.

High School DxD BorN

Studio: TNK (Daimidaler, Cosplay Complex)
Director: Tetsuya Yanagisawa (Shattered Angels, Highschool DxD, Daimidaler)
Will I watch it?: Maybe in a future when I´m so sick I can´t get out of bed let alone think straight…oh wait.

So I have a funny relationship with this show, because my first boyfriend recommended me to watch this show, naturally, I didn´t really care for it until I got sick one day, had no internet connection and the only thing sitting around on my computer was anime I have already seen, Code Geass and…this. So I watched it, finished it in two days and I actually kind of enjoyed it. Did I care to watch the second season? No, but maybe someday, when I´m knocked out of sanity again I will. Cheers to my first and only harem anime I finished.

Kekkai Sensen

Studio: Bones (Fullmetal Alchemist, Noragami, Captain Earth)
Director: Rie Matsumoto (Kyousogiga)
Will I watch it?: Yes.

I like Bones. They make decent shows. As for Kekkai Sensen, I didn´t really feel it up until I watched the trailer, which could be described with the overused word “epic”, I´m interested.

Mikagura Gakuen Kumikyoku

Studio: Dogakobo (Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, Yuru Yuri, Makai Ouji)
Director: Tarou Iwasaki (One Week Friends.)
Will I watch it?: 10% chance I´ll try it out.

If the preview starts with a girl yelling, you know it´s trouble. However, I suspect that this – much like most shows this season will be somewhere between mediocre and okay. Do I want to spend 20 minutes a week to this kind of show though? Depends.

Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu

Studio: Satelight (Akame Ga Kill, Steins Gate, Not Haruhi Suzumiya)
Director: Jun’ichi Wada (Literally nothing)
Will I watch it?: Feel obligated to watch it.

I´m not so sure how I feel about this being a thing. I like Haruhi, but I believe that if Haruhi was done by anyone else but Kyoani, I think I wouldn´t like it, and I feel like they´d rely too much on the tropes the characters play, a.k.a the tsundere, the cynical twat, the borderline gay character and for this show, the cute shy character.

I´ll watch it, but I´m expecting a royal mess, really, how much did Satelight pay to get this?

Studio: SHAFT (Monogatari, Madoka, Nisekoi)
Director: Naoyuki Tatsuwa (Katten Kaizo, Nisekoi)
Will I watch it?: Yup.

The first season was okay. I enjoyed it for what it was and really, there´s nothing more to it, which is why I´ll watch it, because Shaft´s stylization definitely gives the show some extra points.

Ore Monogatari!!

Studio: Madhouse (Chihayafuru, Death Note, Death Parade, Black Lagoon, Monster…)
Director: Morio Asaka (Chiyahafuru, Nana, Chobits)
Will I watch it?: AOTY. Fucking yes.

I´ve said it before and  I´ll say it again, Ore Monogatari willl slay its shoujo counterparts not only in this season, not only in this very year but in a long, long time. Ore Mongatari is pure, cutesy precious gold that deserves every single bit of Madhouse´s love, the team is fantastic, the characters 100% lovable and really, it´d be harder to mess this up than do this right. I´m hype.

Owari no Seraph

Studio: WIT Studios (Rolling Girls, Shingeki No Kyojin)
Director: Daisuke Tokodo (Nothing but a few Shingeki and Guilty Crown episodes)
Will I watch it?: 10% chance I´ll try it out.

So we´ve heard a lot about this in the community, mainly because it´s by WIT and WIT produced Attack On Titant, then again, WIT also produced Rolling Girls, and while it looks pretty, I wonder if anyone actually likes that show apart from the visuals. However WIT seems to be tracing down the SnK formula, and judging by the preview they´re going the right way, just in a more anime fashion. Animation looks slick and I doubt it´ll be dowright horrible. I´ll watch it.

Plastic Memories

Studio: Dogakobo (Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, Yuru Yuri, Makai Ouji)
Director:Yushiyuki Fujiwara (Gj Club)
Will I watch it?: I´ll give it an episode.

Key? Is that you? If it isn´t it sure as hell sounds like you plot-wise. I´m not sure, guys, I don´t think I´ll like this, as it seems to have that kind of Ef: melodrama which I really need to be in the mood for to enjoy. But hey, I´ll give it an episode.

Punch Line

Studio: MAPPA (Zankyo No Terror, Shingeki No Bahamut, Garo)
Director: Yutaka Uemura (Dantalian No Shoka)
Will I watch it?: Duh.

MAPPA has earned my full trust after their debut and its following shows; screw Ufotable, man, these are the guys pushing the limit of animation. Even with the panty fest trailer, I believe they´ll make this a show worthy talking about.

Yamada-kun to Nananin no Majo

Studio: Liden Films (Terraformars, Arslan Senki)
Director: Tomoki Takuno (Nothing.)
Will I watch it?: Yes.

I´ll be honest, my heart sank a little after seeing that Liden Films will be adapting a manga I hold close to heart. I loved the drama to pieces, and the manga is easily my favourite long running series, wheter it´s all the kisses, the friendship or the D-Frag like comedy of it all, Yamada-kun is definitely entertaining…if done right. Furthermore, this is getting 12 episodes, and I know this isn´t nearly enough to capture the greatness of, well, everything. Colour me concerned.

Everything Else:

See here the things I didn´t feel like talking about all that much.

Battle Spirits: Burning Soul

Digimon Adventure tri.

Unlike a 100% of the viewers, I don´t share any emotional connection to Digimon.

Duel Masters VSR

Hello!! Kiniro Mosaic

Houkago no Pleiades

Oh Gainax.

Koukaku Kidoutai Arise: Alternative Architecture

Don`t care for this all that much.

Kyoukai no Rinne

Another Inuyasha? No thanks.

These silly Chinese cartoons.

Shokugeki no Souma

The hype is coming from the same guys hyping up Toriko. So I´ll pass.

Show By Rock!!

This title doesn´t even make sense.

Uta no☆Prince-sama♪ Maji Love Revolutions

I like this. I´ll watch it.

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. Zoku

Never liked the first season even after trying to watch it thrice. No-pe.
