A Look Into The 2015 Winter Season: Magical Boys, Sequels & Pornographic Food.

2014 has been a good year for anime. I think most of us could somewhat agree with that. Now it´s time for anime to press reset, and start over, it´s time for a new year, new opportunities to break out, new Chinese cartoons to obsess over. Or not. ´Cause kicking off the 2015 year we have a season that might aswell comeback and trashy harem mayhem.

Absolute Duo

Studio: Studio 8.bit (Infinite Stratos, Grisaia No Kajitsu, Walkure Romanze)
Director: Atsushi Nakayama (Directed one of the Lyrical Nanonah films)
Will I watch it?: Nein.
The music of the PV made me forget that I was watching the preview of a generic harem animu and not a Pendulum album tribute video. I mean, as far as generic harem animu previews go, it was pretty sweet. If it weren´t for the studio, the tags and the status quo of its genre, I may consider giving it a try. However, there´s no doubt in my mind that the generic MC will inevitably become the cocksure pseudo-badass that all supernatural harem anime leads are destined to become.

If you´re (somehow) into shows like these, Absolute Duo might be your best bet.

Aldnoah.Zero 2

Studio: A-1 Pictures & TROYCA (Sword Art Online, Kuroshitsuji, Shigatsu wa Kimi Uso)
Director: Ei Aoiki (Fate/Zero)
Will I watch it?: Yes.
It´s pretty clear that the entire ending of last season was just a ploy to get people to watch the second season, my prediction is that Slaine turned into some evil bastard, the princess is in a wheelchair and Inaho has dissapeared, just to come back like a badass and shock the audience with his cheap return. Maybe he and Slaine will chill and fight together against some evil. Or not. Regardless, the first season was entertaining enough, so I´m on board.

Assassination Classroom

Studio: Brains Base (Spice & Wolf, Durarara!!, D-Frag!)
Director: Seiji Kishi (Angel Beats, Hamatora, Danganronpa)
Will I watch it?: I´ll give it a try.
Well here´s a dorky premise + pv. The thing that sparks my interest about this is the fact that it apparently has no real main character, therefore allowing all the characters to be weird as fuck. So, for a funky and weird-as-fuck story like this, AssClass may actually be alright. I doubt that a story about a class trying to kill their octopuss-alien-thingy teacher is really up my alley but, hey, I said the same thing about Parasyte and that show is my favourite show of the season, Bahamut aside.

Handsome High School Earth Defense Club Love!

Studio: Diomedea (Akuma No Riddle, Campione, Problem Children Come From Another World)
Director: Shinji Takamatsu (Gintama, Daily Lives Of Highschool Boys, School Rumble)
Will I watch it?: Yes.
I´m not the most excited person in the world for this series, it looks pretty campy and I don´t think that the comedy will resonate with me. The Nagisa look-a-like is already annoying me, and the premise only rises unexcited questionmarks in my head. Normally, I´d be praising the angels for an anime about magical boys, especially if it´s directed by the director of Gintama and the Nichibros, both of which are hilarious. Still, the previews don´t cut the chase just yet, I´ll watch it anyway.

Death Parade

Studio: Madhouse. (Death Note, Black Lagoon, Monster, Mahouka)
Director: Yuzuru Tachikawa (Episode director of Kill la Kill, Zankyo No Terror & Shingeki No Kyojin)
Will I watch it?: Yes.

We have all seen the Mirai Project short, right? Well this is the full series of said short. Hey, I´m excited, all right. It´s Madhouse doing what Madhouse does best, so there´s little doubt in my mind that this is going to be any less than great, I doubt it´ll get any commercial reception though. If it can keep up with the animation and tension of the short film, holy shit, I´m hype.

Dog Days.

Studio: Don´t know.
Director: Don´t care.
Will I watch it?: Nah.

Slice of life involving dogs. Or not.

Durarara!! 2x Shou

Studio: Shuka (In-between animation of Zankyo No Terror)
Director: Takahiro Omori (Samurai Flamenco, Hell Girl, Kokoro Connect)
Will I watch it?: Duh.
That sums up my thoughts for this show. Durarara!! was one of the first anime I have seen and while the final arc definitely forgot its own rule of cool while focusing on the characters that exactly no one actually cared about, I think the first half still makes up for the lackluster part of this urban fairytale. Having said that, I´ve read a bit of the light novels, and if they properly adapt it, Durarara!! fans are in for a real treat. So yes, this, Death Parade and a few others will definitely make my Winter nights a little warmer.

Studio: Arms (Elfen Lied, Queens Blade, Ikkitousen)
Director: Akira Iwanaga (Tegami Bachi)
Will I watch it?: Are you kidding me.
Enter Shinichirou, the lamest generic harem animu lead dork you can find. Now enter Sakuya, a probably tsundere just-as lame generic anime love interest (but not really) who posesses some sort of lame generic harem animu power. Shinichirou begins working for Sakuya until one day he accidentally releases one of the creatures, after Sakuya bakas him up for a few minutes, they cooperate to catch it. Hilarity unfolds. By hilarity I mean snorefest. God damn, this sounds boring.

Anyway, this is so irrelevant that there isn´t even a pv out just yet, so enjoy this still image and a cute japanese girl talking in the background instead.

Jojo´s Bizzare Adventures: Stardust Crusaders 2.

Studio: David Productions (Lots of inbetween stuff)
Director: Tsuda Naokatsu
Will I watch it?: Nah.

I´m still waiting for the day where I get inspired to finish the first season.

Junketsu no Maria

Studio: Production I.G (Psycho-Pass 1, Kuroko No Basket, FLCL)
Director: Goro Taniguchi (Code Geass, Planetes)
Will I watch it?: Doubt it.
Translated as Maria The Virgin Witch, the preview made me feel about 10 times sleepier than I already am. I really, really don´t get the hype for this one, just because it´s written by the dude who wrote Code Geass. As of now, The Virgin Witch Maria or whatever feels like an adaptation of a kiddy witch story about a witch that has to defeat monsters to prove herself worthy of something, maybe with a little tsun-tsun and symbolism on the side. Instead, it´s about a witch that will lose her powers when she loses her virginity, maybe with a little tsun-tsun and symbolism on the side.

I don´t care, I don´t think I´m gonna care, this show ain´t for me.

Juuou Mujin no Fafnir

Studio: Diomedea (See: The studio that only does light novel adaptations)
Director: ???
Will I watch it?: Fuck off.
So there´s some dude who transfers to some school with hot anime babes because he is the only guy with a D in this universe, that´s right, folks, this is the first ever mainstream futanari show! I kid, I kid. Anyway, this dude one day finds a girl naked (She probably has white hair) and conveniently re-encounters his lil´ sister, incest fans, get yo´ guns out.

Long story short: The girls want the D, the guy wants the D, the dragons want the D, Hell, everyone wants the D!

Again, this one is so irrelevant that it doesn´t have PV out either, so have a picture of an underaged D girl.

Kamisama Hajimemashita Season 2

Studio: TMS Entertainment (Gugure Kokkuri-san, Itazura Na Kiss)
Director: Daichi Akitaro (Fruits Basket, Bokura Ga Ita)
Will I watch it?: Naturally.
I love Kamisama Hajimemashita, and I genuinely think that it´s one of if not the best shoujo rom-com that I have seen, I love the humor, the lighthearted nature and all in all, the feel good moments that many of its shoujo-buddies just can´t seem to get right, I´m looking at you, Ao Haru Ride and Ookami Shoujo. So yes, I´m incredibly excited.

Kantai Collection.

Studio: Diomedea (Man these guys are busy this season)
Director: Keizou Kusakawa (Dog Days, Akuma No Riddle)
Will I watch it?: Never ever.
Look at these cute moe battle ships kyun kyun.

Koufuku Graffiti

Studio: SHAFT (Nisekoi, Monogatari, Madoka Magica, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei)
Director: Akiyuki Shinbo (The dude that does literally everything coming out of SHAFT)
Will I watch it?: …maybe.
Anime is weird. Period.

Enter SHAFT´s most recent attempt in one-upping their anime game by giving chubby girls the limelight, how are they going to do this? having a depressed moe girl who eats out of misery, duh! Clearly, this is going to be eyebrow raising at least, but the fact that Mari Okada is the writer has all kinds of alarms going off in my head. Personally and, hey, this is just a personal thing, but I really, really dislike her drama. It´s inmature, unrealistic and drags on for way to long. Right, Nagi No Asukara, Golden Time, WIXOSS?

Kuroko No Basket Season 3

Studio: Production I.G (Haikyuu, Psycho Pass season 1)
Director: Shunsuke Tada (Bungaku Shoujo, Prince Of Tennis)
Will I watch it?: Is this even a question?
Shit, I never expected to love a cartoon series about boys playing basketball that lasts for more than 75 episodes as much as I do. Kuroko No Ninja is pure fun and adrenaline, it´s ridiculous, really, really ridiculous.

Rolling Girls

Studio: WIT studio. (Attack On Titan)
Director: Kotomi Deai (Silver Spoon 2, episode director of Kids On The Slope, Ergo Proxy)
Will I watch it?: I´ll give it a try.
The PV looked decent, y´know, aesthetic wise. Apart from that, I really have no idea what to expect, but it may be Samurai Flamenco reminiscent. Call me crazy, but I just have that feeling. I´ll watch a few episodes and see where it goes.

Saenai Heroine no Sodate-kata

Studio: A-1 Pictures (Your Lie In April, Sword Art Online, Kuroshitsuji)
Director: Kanta Kamei (Bunny Drop, Nanana´s Buried Treasure, Oreshura)
Will I watch it?: Fuck off.

This one is part of the NoitaminA line-up, it´s generic as hell, but here´s a short synopsis anyway: Glasses-kun, just like you, is an otaku, he works part-time to support his hobby, one day he sees a beautiful girl and glasses-kun turns her into a character for his doujinshi, soon, he realizes that she´s actually a girl from his school, and she joins his circle, probably, along with other pretty girls, including his foreign childhood friend and a genius tsundere with a tragic past, probably.

Anyway, this is just one of the many self-insert disguised harem animu that is rarely, if ever, done right. The only good one I can think is the Pet Girl Of Sakurasou.

Seiken Tsukai no World Break

Studio: Diomedea (Most of the harem trash this season)
Director: Takayuki Inagaki (Desert Punk, Marginal Prince)
Will I watch it?: Snores.
Diomedea sure are busy this season, huh? Anyway, World Break is just another magic animu with 2D babes with big tits and a beta male lead, if you´re into this stuff, go ahead, but this just bores the hell outta me.

Tokyo Ghoul √A

Studio: Pierrot (Akatsuki No Yona, Bleach, Tokyo Ghoul S1)
Director: Shuhei Norita (Tokyo Ghoul season 1, some OVAs)
Will I watch it?: Duh.
I enjoyed season one, I don´t think that it was the best thing ever, but the final episode definitely blew my mind what with it´s artstyle, animation and tension, if the second season can keep up with the psychological aspects of said final episode, we´re in for one hell of a ride. Let´s hope for the best.

Everything Else:

I´m tired and I don´t really have much to say about the remaining shows, so let´s speed this up, shall we?

Sengoku Musou:

Yet another sengoku anime that won´t get the time of day, it looks generic and it definitely won´t live up to the only sengoku anime that really counts – Sengoku Basara – so yeah, yet  another irrelevant production from an irrelevant studio adapted from an irrelevant game.

Shinmai Maou no Keiyakusha:

The horny dogs at Production IMS must really love their jobs if they can keep pushing out uninspiring trashy anime like this season after season after season, spikey-haired MC somehow ends up in a magic school and a bunch of anime babes fall on his lap, sound familiar?

Shounen Hollywood: Holly Stage for 50:

I lost interest in the show pretty early on, but from what I heard, it actually turned out to be pretty good. Anyway, I don´t really care.

Soukyuu no Fafner: Dead Aggressor – Exodus:

Apparently this is a sequel to a series that I´ve never ever heard of, so I´m not interested. I found it funny that it shares the same title as the anime the people in Shirobako are working on.

Tantei Opera Milky Holmes TD:

My god, what the hell is this?

THE iDOLM@STER: Cinderella Girls:

See Tantei Operea Milky Holmes TD.

Yoru no Yatterman:

This may be a potential dark horse for the season, but, eh.

Yuri Kuma Arashi:

The most relevant one out of the bunch. Apparently it´s a yuri anime directed by the Utena and Penguindrum guy, I´ll watch it.

And that´s that for the Winter season, guys. Overall, it´s the season for sequels, I think I´ll enjoy it more than this season, at least. What will you guys be watching? For me, I´ll be watching 11 shows, which is a whole lot less than the usual, but hey, quality over quantity, right?

  1. The first season of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure only really gets good about 11 episodes (where the focus shift from the cardboard cutout Jonathan Jostar to an actually interesting character Joseph Jostar.)

Too bad they went back to having everything completely uninteresting in Stardust Crusaders.
